After surgery

Today was the big day! Charlie had a few surgeries done and everything went smoothly. Overall, he was done and in recovery after about 3 hours. He’s a rockstar!!

Before surgery

The first thing they did was the laser eye surgery. They did this to correct any remaining abnormalities caused by the ROP that didn’t get corrected from the shots (from many months ago). The ophthalmologist said everything looks great now and he shouldn’t be affected from ROP anymore; he should have most of his peripheral vision and just may be nearsighted in the future. All good things!

After his eyes were done, they placed his G tube and that went smoothly as well. They did this laparoscopically which was beneficially for a few reasons. 1.) it uses a scope so there isn’t any major incision, and 2.) they could use that scope to check for any existing hernias. The good news is that he didn’t have any, so he didn’t need that repair on top of his other procedures.

During the surgeries, Charlie had to be put under anesthesia and therefore intubated. We weren’t sure if this would set him back respiratory-wise because it had been so long since he needed the breathing tube, so we were prepared to see him on the ventilator for a while after surgery. Fortunately, Charlie is so tough and determined, they were about to extubate him before they even brought him back to his room! He is doing an amazing job and on 1/4L of oxygen. He continues to amaze us all!

Before surgery

Charlie was very restless and uncomfortable after surgery but has calmed down a lot. We hope he will have a speedy recovery! It was a very long and stressful day, but we are thankful that everything went smoothly and that this BIG step could bring him home sooner!

Charlie is amazing and so strong. He has come such a long way and we couldn’t be more proud of him. We thank you all so much for the prayers today! He is so loved and we are extremely blessed to have so many people care about our sweet baby boy. We thank you and hope you have a great week! God is good.

So very thankful for all the wonderful things that went on today...eye surgery successful, Gtube done laporoscpically, no hernias, tolerating being down to 1/4 L of O2 (so concerned for that & amazed at his stamina). Did they do his circumcision? Cannot believe all he has gone thru. God is so good. He looks so full of personality and i bet he is as anxious to get home as much as you are to have him home. All of you will have some major adjustments. (Praying in advance for all of that). It shouldn't be too long now.
